Everyone,
I got Velocity's big brake kit installed on my '95 Jetta VR6 on Saturday,
and I wanted to share the info as well as my impressions with the list.
This kit offers the most bang-for-the-buck in the braking department, and
it's a very thoroughly thought out kit that yields impressive results.
THE KIT:
- -12.3" Audi TT rotors, slotted, cadmium plated
- -Carriers
- -Rotor Spacers (A3s only)
- -Heat shields for the ball joints
- -Ferodo street pads (DS2000 fast road pads available for an additional cost)
Velocity's kit will fit A3 VR6s, the Corrado VR6, all A4 VR6s as well as
1.8T VWs. Please note that all 1995 and earlier cars must switch to the
1996 and later larger "banana" calipers as well as the matching brakes lines
at an additional charge.
PRICING:
- -A3: $965.00
- -A4: $820.00
Please call Velocity for more info on the kit. They anticipate a two week
window until the kit is available for sale.
IMPRESSIONS:
Even the most discriminating buyer will be impressed with the quality of
Velocity's kit. The 12.3" TT rotors look monstrous, and they are
appreciably thicker than my 11" slotted rotors for greater heat dissipation.
The cadmium plating gives a the rotors clean, bright silver look and
offers protective coating. Since I have a '95, I opted for red Drivers'
Edition calipers, front and rear, and Velocity's corresponding DOT-approved
braided steel lines. I also took the opportunity to replace my rear rotors
with slotted versions and Ferodo pads. Sure, the rear slotted rotors don't
do a darn thing, but they complete the factory Porsche RS look. I figure if
I'm spending this kind of money and everything is apart, I might as well do
it right and have no nagging regrets later on. The custom made parts for
the kit, such as the heat shields and spacers, have a factory fit and finish
to to them as well.
My Jetta has an extremely purposeful look now, with aggressive looks that
back its enormous braking power. The 12.3" rotors now generously fill my
17" wheels like never before, and the red calipers look great.
Now for the good part: the braking. I was upgrading from the 11" rotors and
smaller calipers, so this kit no doubt made a more dramatic difference on my
car than for '96 and on owners. Even so, you won't be disappointed. The
braking power is vastly improved, and so is the control. I'm still bedding
in the pads on my car, but I got to thrash the 12.3" prototype kit on
Velocity owner Jeff Moss' 1995 Jetta VR6. Like me, he is running Ferodo
DS2000 fast road pads up front. While they require a certain level of heat
before they are effective, they blow away the street Ferodos under
performance driving and high speed braking. Very hard braking from 85mph
was controlled and direct with zero fade, whereas my with my old 11" setup,
the brakes would groan loudly and the car would get twitchy. The Velocity
kit can take all of the abuse you can throw at them, and I threw quite a
bit. :)
For the hard numbers guys, EC ran an article a while back on a New Beetle
using Autotech's A4-only 12.3" brake kit, and they recorded 1 foot shorter
60-0 stopping times than those printed for an E-36 M3. While it's only one
arbitrary test and no M3 was on hand for a direct comparison, it gives one a
general idea of the performance level that these brakes offer.
In summary, the Velocity big brake kit is very high quality, affordable,
yields impressive results, and looks great. It's a worthwhile modification
to consider for your next brake job.
