Well, its done and it functions as planned. The mod should take about an hour to
do, mainly because working on the fuse panel under the dash is a PITA. I haven't
decided on a location or type of switch yet. I may use another rear window
defogger switch for the clean look. The economical route would be a small Radio
Hack black rocker switch mounted between the A/C rec. and the rear window def. I
just have a small toggle switch mounted in an (alarm remote sized) box stuck
inside the ashtray cavity for testing purposes. The rear def switch could light
up when the EDL is off if I use one. I will test its effectiveness tomorrow on a
hoist while my assistant holds one wheel stationary to make the EDL activate. I
hope it will activate without the rear wheels turning. Otherwise we will have to
rely on some drag racers to test it. The few that disconnect their entire ABS
system to race say that traction isn't as good when its off. My system is a
safer way to accomplish that as it doesn't disable the ABS and subsequent
electronic rear proportioning gizmo. Remember, it is for Teves 20 only. The
earlier system uses a brake pedal position switch that will not be too easy to
simulate. Any tampering with that system would probably disable everything. Ian
F. is being kind enough to put together html docs with my pics and posting them
somewhere. We will inform everyone where to find instructions when its complete.

http://members.home.com/frechett/edl-disable.htm

The above URL is no longer available.
However, there is a copy of it here:
http://www.gti-vr6.net/library/transmission/edl-disable/edl-disable.htm

That page contains detailed instructions on how to install
the EDL disable switch.

This switch will kill the EDL functionality without affecting
the ABS at all. It simply fools the car into doing what it normally
does when you step on the brake pedal, but without lighting the
up brake lights.

I haven't performed the mod it yet, but I'm pretty sure the hardest
part of the whole thing is stripping the tape off the wires
on the back of the fuse panel. Everything else is just
cutting, crimping and testing, with some really easy soldering
on the mini-switch itself.

Credits:
Bob C. found the control wire to the ABS/EDL controller and worked
out where all the relevant wires were, and where to get a source of power.
I think Uwe provided some info about how to diagnose with VWTool because
his EDL stopped working by itself long ago.
I did initial testing during the winter to verify that
EDL was disabled when the brake light circuit was active.
>From there Bob, Me, and Uwe (and a fellow EE on IRC who's name I can't
remember) worked out a couple different ideas for circuits and we
eventually settled on the simplest.

Bob implemented it, and tested it, and wrote up the installation
instructions and I provided moral support and technical advice, then
created and editted the web page.

P.S. Andy, Russell, yes you can copy the page, but hold off for a
week or two until we know if there are any needed corrections or
  additions to the information.
