All,

Lately (last two days) my baby seems to have developed a tendency to fight
back when I try to shift to third. Now, about a month and a half ago, when
I took it in for the first oil change, the shifter was pretty sloppy; not
much feedback. After I picked the car up, it felt a lot tighter, and (I
think) had less vibration. Neither of these things were an issue, so I
figured I must've got a free fix of some sort. At any rate, with my new
tight shifter, I soon developed a difficulty shifting into second; kind of
like the first or reverse gear lockouts. Forcing it in wouldn't result in
grinding, but generally I'd just put it back in neutral and into second and
it'd work fine. Very sparodic.

Anyhow, now I don't really get the problem with second anymore, but with
third. I'll go to shift into third, and it just won't shift w/o excessive
force or popping it back into neutral and then trying third again. It's
much more frequent now, however. At least once or twice per trip, and not
being able to get into third really pisses me off coming out of some
corners at high speed. :)

Any suggestions? I'll be going to the dealer soon for the 15K(km) service
and having them fix that. As well as my sticking passenger side door and
rough idle :). Just curious if anyone has any suggestions as I'm sure the
dealer will keep the car for at least a day and come up with nothing. Who
knows, maybe I'll get one of the Audi loaners..

Dylan

I had somewhat the same problem about 2 months back. I brought the car in and
the dealer replaced the 3rd gear and synchro. The mechanic told me that he
saw nothing wrong with the gear visibally, but it always grinded going into
third. It was replaced under warranty. Maybe poor build quality is a factor?
I haven't had any problems since with the third gear. But, this Friday I am
bringing my car in to have them check out the clutch because ever since I had
3rd replaced, I noticed that the clutch has been grabbing higher. Actually,
ever since it started to grind into third, the clutch was grabbing high.
Anybody know what chances I have having the clutch replaced under warranty. I
know that this is not a warranteed part but mean the car only has 24,000 miles
on it. Could I use the 3rd gear grind as premature wear? I don't ride the
clutch and I peel out a lot. Any suggestions?

TIA,
Glen

Had a similar problem with my '86 golf (GL - YUCK). It happened right before
the clutch shattered (yes - shattered - I saw the pieces) Have it checked
while still under warranty (clutch isn't covered but the price of checking the
gears is)

Your shifter's cables could need to be adjusted.

I just recently had my transmission bracket and bushings replaced.
They were worn to the point that it was getting tougher and tougher
to shift into 1st. That solved the problem. Shifts like a new car.
