Subject: [gti-vr6] Installing a Quaife.

Hi fellows,
I have received the Quaife diff. and loking into getting it installed. I
have been working with a mechanic that has done a lot of work on my
other cars preparing them for road races and driver's ed events. He just
told me that he checked with folks that are familiar with VWs and was
told that installation of the Quaife requires almost complete
disassembly of the trans. I was wondering if anyone has actually done
this and if so how was it done. Any idea on where I can get reasonably
detailed procedure for this?

Actually, it requires *complete* disassembly of the trans, which of course
must be done with it out of the car.  Your "mechanic" must be used to rear
wheel drive cars, where the differential is found on the back of the vehicle
in its own housing.
The procedure is a little more than just disassembly, dropping in the Quaife,
and buttoning everything back up.  New bearings must be installed on the
Quaife which requires resetting their preload (through shim thickness
calculation after measuring unloaded freeplay with a dial indicator).  If you
have 60K plus miles, I would also suggest a full rebuild while you're in
there, which makes the job even more specialized.  A full 02A rebuild, Quaife,
and the entire labor to install it runs around $2500 from our shop.  I'm
surprised you were not aware of the install complexity before plunking down
$1k+ for the unit.  Good luck.
