(I did my research and found exactly 3 posts about this same topic.)
I had a weird thing happen to me last night. I was driving through a parking
lot and went to back up. I put the shift lever into reverse, but the car was
in first and went forward. Needless to say, this was a bit disconcerting!
Any ideas anyone? I tried a bunch of times since then to duplicate the
problem, but it hasn't come back.

this happened to me in my golf... turns out the ball on the shift knob had
slid out of its socket. don't know if everything's the same on the 02A,
never bothered to pop the shifter boot off and have a look, but check
that...

This happened to me a couple times in my '84 Rabbit GTi and later found it to
be a linkage problem. Take a look at the linkage to see if it's loosening up
or needs to be replaced.

Chris,

Yep, I've had a similar experience. Twice as a matter of fact. First time
wound up that a bolt had worked its way loose inside(!) the tranny. I had
nothing to grab except for 2nd gear at that time. Fixed that under warranty
at 5K miles. 2nd time was around 25-30K or so. I couldn't grab reverse for
anything. Every time I tried for reverse, I got either 1st, 2nd or nothing
at all. Dealer adjusted the linkage and its been fine ever since. I'm
around 75K now, so it seems to be a "permanent" fix.

Here's a submission for Problem: Getting Forward Gear When Shifting Into Reverse in the Transmission section.

My Mk4 VR6 Jetta has done this since new. I think it is an issue of tolerances in how the cables are adjusted. There are two ways you can tell that you got first gear instead of reverse (that is, before you let out the clutch and crash into something):

1) Normally when you shift into reverse you can feel the syncros working as the gears engage. It's a sort of notchy feeling. If you get first instead of reverse, you won't feel that.

2) If you've got the feature where the passenger side mirror tilts down when you shift into reverse, it won't. If you don't hear the whir of the mirror motor, put it back in neutral, let out the clutch, and then try again. I've never had it happen twice in a row.
