Peter, Without driving the car I am only guessing. To me I have heard and
had to fix other cars with a similar noise. While driving at a constant
speed you take your foot off the gas and coast and the noise appears. re
accelerating the noise disappears and so on.
I have seen the pinion gear have a small chip and when it rides on the
coast side of the ring gear you hear it. When it is on the acceleration
side the noise is gone.
I suggest you take it o a VW dealer and depending on when you purchased the
car new or used? It might be covered under the power train warranty.
