OK, everybody who has had or needs a shift linkage
adjustment.
I have had this done a couple of times. I have also had the
nut on top of the shaft ( dohh wally ) come loose and
needing tightening. there is no washer here. this part is
also under the black cap that houses the reverse light
switch on the tranny.
Now the bracket that the cable attaches too, also the one
with the big weight on it, slides over the shaft and has 21
teeth and a double slot for alignment. If this nut comes
loose this will slowly move on the shaft and wear out. if
there becomes even the slightest amount of play here, this
will equal a decent to large cable adjustment required on
the end of the arm. I also noted that the shaft wears it in
a way that gives it vertical play, this is where the loose
nut phenomenon occurs. if there is any play or wear on this
you must get it replaced. Tightening the nut will help but
it WILL loosen again. That play is worked both ways as you
move through the shift pattern.
It only cost $12.00 US and is a 15 minute job. Also the
factory does not use a washer , when I was in here the other
day I put a used copper oil drain plug here for a washer to
give it some grip due to its waer. This washer was necessary
to clear the shaft diameter. I will know how it worked when
I put in the new part tomorrow.
Whether anybody decides to look into this is up to them , I
felt it necessary to post what I have found. After all
wasn't this the lists original purpose.

Hey Guys,

I'm trying to alleviate 1-2 shift crunch with our 02A
trannies. I've read and read and read everything on
the web and the best "guide" is on AWE's site. >>

New, revised directions:

14. IMPORTANT!!: If at any time gear engagement becomes difficult, a
slight adjustment of the shift cables may be in order. Locate the
silver rippled heat shielded shift cables under the hood, beginning at
the firewall. Follow them towards the front of the car to where they
terminate at the shift selector mechanism on the top of the trans.

If the shift lever gets "caught" when shifting out of reverse, or if
front-to-rear gear engagement seems unequal, the driver side shift cable
needs to be adjusted. The driver side cable terminates at the shift
weight lever (on cars equipped) and adjusts the front-to-rear shift
pattern. Note the position of the cable end to the selector lever on
the transmission. Loosen the bolt (removal of shift weight may be
required on some cars) and slide the cable toward the front of the car
in small increments until the lever does not hang up on the reverse
lockout, or front-to-rear engagement equalizes. A millimeter of
difference can have a huge impact on the shift pattern. Retighten the
bolt to 18ft/lbs.

If 1st / 2nd or 5th gear gates are hard to access, then the passenger
side cable must be adjusted. The passenger side cable sits higher than
the driver side cable at the trans shift selector, and adjusts the
side-to-side shift pattern. Note position of cable end on transmission
lever. Loosen the bolt and slide the cable rearward in small increments
for better alignment for 1st and 2nd gear. Slide the cable forward for
better 5th gear alignment. Retighten the bolt to 11ft/lbs.

MOST SHIFTING DIFFICULTIES CAN BE CORRECTED BY A SMALL ALIGNMENT OF THE
SHIFT CABLES.
