Well, I threw the diesel geek short shifter in my mkIV this weekend.  It
was cake. Probably took about 30 minutes with the appropriate tools.

The geek said that he had been trying to get it shorter with the latest
batch....approaching 35% claimed by the neuspeed model.

Feels pretty good, after some adjustments to get the left most gears a
little smoother, it feels quite good.  It'll take a bit of time to get
smooth again, but overall, good impressions, good mod.

On another note, I had intended to do the mt 90, but was stopped by the
lack of a 17mm hex key and NO place to get it.  
Any ideas where I could locate one of these bad boys?

Just finished the install of a Diesel Geek short shift on my 97 GLX-z.
Impressions on a scale of 1-10:

Price: 10 - cheaper than Nuecrap and in line with AWE

Kit quality: 10 - nice fit, welds seem well done,includes extra cotter pin

Instructions: 11 - not kidding.  very well done.  pictures are great

Ease in install: 9 - cuting the flange with a dremel is a bit of a pain - I
tried a grinding wheel first without success.  use a cutting disc and slowly
skim off the metal

Time to install: 10 (took me about 2.5 hours start to finish, including
gather tools and cleaning up)

Results: 10 - I can now complete shifts before the s/c drags the rmps down.
timing is a bit off with the clutch until I get used to the shift timing.

Overall it gets 5 stars from me.  Shifts are smooth and quick.  NO
notchiness once I got the adjustments right.  Only thing I plan to look at
is putting a thin washer on the side to side pivot pin (there is a bit of
front to back play right now) and putting a spacer on the centering spring
to try and have the shifter center faster and stronger (from 1st/2nd to
3rd/4th).

Anyone thinking of getting one should not hesitate.  Just be ready to get
greasy!

I have the Diesel Geek and like it alot.  I wish it was as short a throw as 
my brother's UUC short shifter in his M3, but....

Good product and fast delivery.  Jim was good to deal with!

You don't have to, but you can also ship back your core in the enclosed box.  
Jim even includes a return address label.  I've been slacking shipping mine 
back to get the credit on my credit card!  DOH!

I e-mailed AWE a few weeks ago, and sadly they told me that they don't
make their short shifter anymore. It probably woudn't hurt to call them
and see if they have one lying around, but I wouldn't bet on it. 

There was a group buy for the Diesel Geek SS a while ago in Vortex, and
I've read nothing but praise for it, especially with the side-to-side
reduction kit. Supposedly an easy install, too, espeically compared to
the AWE, which is a major PITA. 

If I had to do it again, I go with the Diesel Geek.

I installed the diesel-geek kit last fall.  No problems.  Decent reduction.
All done from inside the car and 15-minutes in the engine bay.  Great
instructions.

I agree with Marc. I love my Diesel Geek Shifter. It is shorter both
front/back and side/side, and it is the same height as stock. Very nice. I
put mine in last fall during the vortex group buy, and I am very pleased.

The top choice among this crowd seems to be the dieselgeek
(www.dieselgeek) kit (especially since AWE gave up on theirs...).  Easy
install (inside the cabin and under the hood), affordable, decent front-back
and side-side reduction.  I have it and find it very nice.  Smooth shifts
and no grinding.

When I asked Jim about the 2nd gear grind he said that if your tranny grinds
before the kit, it will grind afterwards, but that the kit should not induce
it on non-grinding trannys.

The DG kit is the way to go.  Did mine last summer sitting in my
driveway.  Some minor cutting is required for the install (on the
tranny hump IIRC), but it is so easy there's usually no worries.
There is a few install directions in the archives, as well as Jim's
own excellent directions.

I love it.  Makes the F/B and S/S throws quicker and shorter.

As for the 2nd gear grind, that is neither helped nor hurt by the
shift kit.  The grind is from a part that mounts into the top of the
tranny (a set of synchro mesh type gears-not sure of the real name or
part #).  I had to replace mine about the same time I did the shifter
and the grind goes away.  It's a common problem with the MkIII's,
and the replacement part is an improvement over the stock unit
(another VW redesign).  I usually find if you wait a hair longer
before releasing the clutch, it won't grind.
