I guess if you're taking them off the car, a hacksaw will work.

But- if you have a dremel, USE IT!
Get the extra-heavy-duty cutting disks.
You'll bust through the spring in about 60 seconds.

With the normal-duty disks, it took about 15 minutes.

I agree with Uwe-

But as a side note- if for some reason you can't buy new struts and just want to cut the springs:
You can do it without taking anything apart.
(Like I did)

Rent some spring compressors for $5, jack the car up, remove the wheel, and break out the Dremel.
You *will* need some sort of power tool, you can't fit a hacksaw in there.

Yea- fight the power!

(This info is for the *fronts*- I assume the backs are similar)

To do it, you need something like a Dremel.
Get the super-heavy-duty cutting disks.

You can only remove x.5 coils. (.5, 1.5, 2.5 etc.)
The reason for this is that the coils sit the same way on both sides of the car.
Sitting in the driver's seat- the right side's coil spring ends on the right side.
(On the *outside*- easy to get at)
The left side's coil spring also ends on the right side.
(But because it's on the *left* side of the car, it's on the *inside*- impossible to get to)
The only way to do it is to cut the front of one spring and the back of the other.

This first side, I didn't even use any spring compressors.
You do not want to do this.
Use *some sort* of spring compressing device.

It's easiest to start the cut with the spring compressors still loose.
You can go almost all the way through without using them.
You'll get to enjoy the pretty sparks for about 30 seconds.
If you've cut off 1.5 coils like I did- You will now have 1.5 coils of your spring sitting around the strut tube.
Now you get to cut the piece you just cut off in half.
(To get it out of there)

Pull it out, rotate the spring so the bottom matches up with the little nub.
(You'll se what I mean)
Loosen the compressors and you're done.

If you want to see what my car looks like with 1.5 coils cut from just the front,
Look here:

If you get a simple metal cutting blade for your skill saw, or better yet,
your 10" mitre saw, the process is quite easy, as I have done this many
times. Just make sure you cut straight, not have any flammable material
nearby on the other side of you from the blade, since a ton of sparks fly
quite far, and you will do just fine. If you cut the springs with a torch
(i.e., heat the metal), it will weaken rather fast, that's a certainty.

ya'll frighten me

Cutting springs is a simple matter of using a grinder
I takes about 10 seconds

Get the thin cutting blade

Springs are made of tool grade steel, do not heat them, cuz that is how
they make tool grade steel.

Dremel too weak, takes to long
Us a grinder thin cutting blade.
Makes short work of springs
