And it won't be the last time that happens. I've had 2 let go on
my 16V, and 1 on the VR6. It's the only design flaw I've found
with Neuspeed products. I'm considering designing a replacement
bar mount, but never seem to have time to lay under the car and
dream it up/take measurements. Maybe Todd or one of the guys
from ND (Paul, Chris, 'ya there?) would do it. If it's as common
an occurrence as it would appear, there may be a decent market for them.
I know, I know, why should we have to pay more money to fix something
that the original designer/manufacturer is really responsible for. I
doubt that Neuspeed gets enough direct feedback and complaints to
warrant them taking care of it, plus, I have a feeling that most
people don't drive their cars hard enough to cause the problem.
Is your rear bar set to full stiff? Both mine are, which I bet
contributes to the problem.

Just thinking out loud...

mine broke not to long ago and i had this same thought race through my
head, "i will design a new one";

only problem was about that time, my new one came in the mail, put it on
the car, and have forgotten about it since???!!

Hi Chris,

Yup I busted one about three weeks ago. I called up ND where I bought
it from and they Fed-Ex'd me one and I had it the next day.
Thanks ND!

Personally I think the bracket is a bad design subject to rust, ware,
under
carrage interfearance with curbs, car washes and road debris.

Vin at ND tells me its rather a common problem but as yet Neuspeed has
made
no effort to redesign the part.

I'm willing to be brainstrom and design a beter one if your askin.

Jim,
I've lost 3 off my '97 GTI VR6 (28mm set to full stiff), and 4 off my '92
GTI 16V (also 28mm, full stiff - down, Wally).
Can you say design flaw?

Abe Getchell (who's a rice-boy now) broke a clamp 6 months after getting the
rear sway, I've broken 3 in the last year and a half. And I'm not trying to
either... honest. :-) Way back I remember Mike Balasko breaking several himself.

Come on people speak up, who else has had a Nospeed rear sway clamp break on um?
It's just a bad design, but at the time when I got mine it was the only thing
out.

What exactly breaks is the 1" wide bracket that hooks onto the bottom of the
axle
and comes up around the polyurethane bushing and bolts to the 1" x 1" plate at
the top. It breaks right above the polyurethane bushing leaving the bolt
and 1" x 1" plate in place. The loud "THWANG!" is the bracket launching off
the axle and the sway bar crashing against the axle. In all 3 of my breaks,
I was driving slow through a parking lot turning one way or the other when
it let go. So in all 3 cases I've heard it, and recovered what remains of
the bracket. Also in all 3 cases the top portion of the bracket, bolt, and
plate have remained in place.

It looks like it starts with stress cracks cracking the "powder coat" paint job
and then rusting down inside the cracks. I count nearly 15 separate stress
cracks just above the bushing location on my latest clamp. As I examine the
cracks you can clearly see (at the break) the rust penetrates nearly 1/2 the
thickness of the steel clamp.

I install mine this weekend with the help of a racer friend. (he has an extra
floor jack) :-)

> Hmm, 6.5 lbs. vs 32 lbs., are you SURE about that?
Yes, I just weighed the Shine bar and I weighed the NS bar and hardware 2 years
ago before installing. The front 25mm NS sway bar weighs 22 lbs.

Manny,

I'm not on the offensive and please don't take it personally. I just felt
the statement was a bit broad. We don't live in a black and white, yes/no,
do/don't society. The issue of choice is what made our county great. And
for you to make that statement based on a small sampling, I felt it was
incorrect. The clamps maybe designed better, better material, higher grade
of bolts but that gets to be race car grade and the pricing will have to
reflect it. The system is generally suited for agressive street driving.

Does anyone regularly drag their cars with the stock 02A tranny? If they
do, we know what'll eventually happen. And maybe it's the same case
here...

The rear bar is 17lbs. The package was 19lbs from Neuspeed.

Mine broke as I was turning into my driveway. Thought some kid had just
thrown a basket ball at my car... it was loud. Anyways, I got to find
the piece that broke and look at it. It is the piece that goes all the
way around the torsion beam. The bolt was fine, and so was the small
piece it goes thru. If I remember correctly, the bracket broke on the
top, near where the bolt goes thru, about an inch away from the hole.
