I was working at a VW dealer today and when I had a chance, I popped in the
latest parts microfiche for '97 and '98 G/J's.  I looked at the front
suspension and from what it said, all the VR6's from ~1/97 have the same
struts and sway bar. The point here being that the DE's (and its advertised
suspension upgrade) aren't any different than the regular cars that were
built around the same time.  The part # listed for the strut was 1H0 413 031
Q, which is exactly what came out of my 7/97 GLX.

The other thing I found out is that the new valve thingie by the RF
wheelhouse on the '98's is listed as a "fuel system diagnosis pump" or
something like that.  I have no idea what it actually does.
