 Chris-

Oops. I wasn't too clear about it. I originally typed just the last eight
digits (VM132357), but then put the whole number, which of course, had two
"V"s. So, you're looking at the wrong "V" (or "W" for that matter). It's
the 10th character that specifies the year. As for the whole number,
looking at my VIN again, "3VWTD81H0VM132357", the "3" means the car was made
in Mexico. "VW" is obvious. "T" is the body style. "D" is the engine. "8"
means airbags. "1H" is the model (notice that most part number for our cars
start with that). "0" is a check digit. As mentioned, the "V" is the model
year. "M" means the Puebla factory. "132357" is the production number. If
your car is "VMxxxxxx". it's a '97, if it's "WMxxxxxx" it's a '98. I hope
that makes a little more sense.
