Hi,

First post to the list (ooo a newbie). Saw a nice ginster gellow
GTi at the Merrifield Mobil carwash yesterday (Fairfax, VA, USA) . Had a
RawNRG banner on the front windshield, which I believe is a DC VW owners
group. If someone from that group could mail me privately pleeze...
(that car Looked SWEET)! Anyway...

After getting gas yesterday, I headed out to chew up some backroads
in my new (still smells new anyway) '95 VR6. Drove for about 45 minutes,
then stopped to go down to the Potomac river for a while. When I came back
and drove away, I noticed a popping sound coming from the front end. It was
coming from around the right front wheel. It happens only once while
braking, and only once while accelerating, that is I can only replicate it
once per acceleration and once per deceleration. Pulled over, checked the
brake to see if I had picked up a rock (I was driving on some gravel roads
for a little while). Nothing. Heard the pop again this morning while
backing out of my parking spot, but this time it seemed to be coming from
the left front wheel. The front shocks are a bit worn, and seem to be
"wheezeing" whenever I go over a speedbump. I was driving it pretty hard
this weekend (at least that white Miata that thought it was hot snot seemed
to think so), and I wonder if I "broke anything loose." Are my ball joints
or tie rods making this noise, or is it something else? I don't think its
the brakes, because it happens when I accelerate too. I am taking the car
back to the dealer this week to have it detailed, engine block steamed, and
all the other stuff that needed to be done when I bought the car, and I was
hoping to be able to give them more info on the problem than "my front end
makes a funny noise when I stop and go. here, listen." Thanks for your
help.

I have a '96 VR6 and had a horrible popping coming from the frontend,
much like you describe: "once per acceleration and once per
deceleration". This was also accompanied by a marked 'lifting' of the
frontend (on accel) and dropping of the frontend once I backed off the
gas.

It ended up being a broken front motor mount, although yours doesn't
sound quite as drastic as mine.

Just a thought!

Difficult to say over the net.
My A2 made a sound as you describe, once on decel/accel.
Turned out to be the poly bushings on lower control arms on aftermarket
sway bar.
I diagnosed by placing 2x4 block fore and aft of one front wheel, then
rocking car.
****This is it.
Ah, wait! I can recall a post or two on this noise. Seems the bolts which
hold the steering rack assembly to the uni-body come loose. I would check
these and follow standard torque procedure. That is, first break(loosen)
then tighten to proper torque spec.
