VW '98 sales in U.S. climb on new Beetle


AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan 5 (Reuters) - German car maker Volkswagen AG <VOWG.F>
said Tuesday that U.S. sales rose more than 50 percent last year to the
highest total since 1981, boosted by the launch of the New Beetle.

The company said it sold 219,573 new cars in the United States in 1998, a
climb of 59.3 percent from 1997. Sales of the New Beetle, which was introduced
in March, totaled 55,842.

VW's top-selling car in the United States remained the Jetta with 89,111.

In December the company sold 17,950 cars in the United States, an increase of
48.2 percent over the same month last year.

Volkswagen U.S. December Sales Rise 48% on Strong Beetle Demand


Auburn Hills, Michigan, Jan. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen AG, Europe's largest
automaker, said VW brand sales in the U.S. in December rose 48 percent to a
17-year record because of strong demand for the New Beetle and its new Passat
sedan.

Sales rose to 17,950 units from 12,116 in the year-earlier month, making this
December VW's best since 1981. Full-year U.S. sales also were the best in 17
years, rising 59 percent from 1997 to 219,679 cars. VW sold 278,513 vehicles
in the U.S. in 1981.

VW said it sold 7,516 New Beetles in the U.S. in December, bringing the year-
to-date total to 55,842 for the car introduced in March.

Passat sales jumped 55 percent to 3,724 in December, thanks to the
introduction of a new model. VW's 1998 U.S. Passat sales more than doubled to
39,272.

Jetta sales declined 25 percent to 5,587 for December and 1.8 percent for the
year to 89,311. It remained VW's top-selling vehicle. Golf sales fell 86
percent in December to 147 and 19 percent for the year to 11,866.
