Hi Joseph,

Here is what I did to mount the CD Changer in the trunk of my GTI. My main
concern was that I could remove it quickly and that it would be mounted in
such as way as not to skip.

I decided to mount the unit horizontally, just behind the rear seat,
passenger side. This is also convienent because the original cable reaches
the player here. I took a 1/4" thick piece of perf board, and cut a piece
about about 8.5" deep and the width of my trunk. I cut the ends to follow
the contour of the rear towers right behind the rear seats. Then I covered
it in black felt to match the rear trunk carpet and mounted the changer
using the supplied brackets and wingnuts. The key is that the board fits
snug on the floor of the trunk so it can't shift forward and back or side to
side.

Now that I've had this installation for a few months, I'm pretty pleased
with it. The unit has never skipped either.

If you want to try this method, one thing you might do is first make a
template out of some thin cardboard or something so you can match the
contour of the rear strut tower bases. Then trace this onto the perf board
and cut the perf board accordingly.

Also, before buying a specific CD changer for your car, make sure it will
work by checking the cable installed in your car. Also, its not a bad idea
to ask about the return policy of the place you are purchasing the changer from.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
Tom

PS. About posting: In general, if the question pertains to the VR6 cars and
you think enough people will have interest, you can post it to the list
(gti-vr6dev.tivoli). If you think its pretty specific or directed at
one individual, you should email them directly. I'm posting this response
since at least one other person has also asked about this mounting and
others might be interested\.

I've got the stock changer in my '98 (98.5 stereo). It's mounted on the passenger's side behind the fender well on some sort of bracket. Acually, the bracket is mounted between the fender well and the tail light, and the changer sort of sticks out into the hatch area about 6" (which I'm not thrilled about).

Hope this helps ...

The OEM VW brackets fit in the trunk area just inside near the passenger side
taillight.A multi-piece bracket. The cable is hidden under the back seat on a
GTI or Cabrio. The VW setup allows water and snow to enter the changer in bad
weather( when the hatch is open)...beware.

Something like this.

Totally out of the way of the cargo area.
There are two tricks to this installation.
1. You need to set the screws in the dp601 to the vertical position
so that the brackets will attach correctly. I've had no unusual problems
 with skipping in this configuration.
2. You need to get some moderately thick metal strapping to screw to the
metal wall behind the unit, and then extend it back toward the tail light.
The left bracket attaches to this strapping. The problem is that the metal
wall doesn't reach far enough back to attach both brackets.
