This might be a cheaper solution: On my '95, VW included a little plastic
piece, hidden next to the ABS module under the back seat. It's a little plug.
You can plug it into the diagnostic port in the dash, and by inserting and
removing it at the right times, make your "check engine" light flash any fault
codes that were stored. Then you can consult the Bentley's to decipher the
codes. ...I'm not sure if this is possible on the newer OBDII cars or not. But
it works on mine!

Good luck,
David
