guys,

I need your help big time here.

My coolant temp sky rocketed way up ( over 240 F) on the way home. The
high speed fan kicked in after the temp went over 230F. Then the oil
temp started going up too ( over 220F+ -- not normal in that cold
weather). Luckily for me, I just got home and was able to shut the car
off.

The outside temp is near the freezing mark and I have been driving for
only 15 minutes.   

Before when the weather is hot, my coolant temp would hover around
230F and then the fan kicked in. 

So something is definitely wrong here. I am going to look for loose
connections tomorrow but in the mean time, could someone let me know
what to look for ?

Coolant level is fine
Oil level is fine
Slow fan kicks in
High speed fan kicked in for the very first time since I owned the car.

The car started heating up pretty quickly since I got back last week.
The car sat for 2 weeks or so in cold weather without being started.

Something that fast is most likely a stuck thermostat (closed).  It is
letting a little water through which is overheated, thus triggering the
fan.  Unless something like no belt on the water pump or such.  Also in
that situation, turn the heat full hot and the fan on high to cool what
flows through the heater core to possibly limp home.

Thanks for the tips about my overheating problem : turns out to be a stuck 
thermostat. The old one turned out to have gunk build up around it.

I ordered a lower temp thermostat from Rapid Parts and put it in. Solved 
the problem. Car runs cooler now.

BTW, I have a brand new fan switch that I ordered from R.P but I am not 
using it. It is for sale (Manish ?). I would like to get cost price for it. 
Anyone ? If you are in Boston area, I can hand deliver it to you. It's one 
day old.

On a side note, I now know why some people stick to their NO-FLO set-up. I 
just slapped one on my C ( the No-Speed RamAir I got from Norm) and the 
sound is truly intoxicating. But summer comes, I'll slap back my modified 
airbox with K&N.

92 SLC - top speed 142 mph (pinned down) - and no I was not driving nor was 
in the car. Wohaa !

Got this same advice [advice was "replace thermostat+housing+housing seal"; aqn].
Had the thermostate and housing replaced, @ $700.
No change.

Then got a suggestion that the overflow bottle cap might be bad.  Before i
could get one, I discovered the overflow bottle had split at the seam.
Loosing pressure, but no coolant.  $46, bottle, $11, cap and back to normal.
