I finally met Uwe yesterday. We spent about 30 minutes during the middle of
a usual hectic non profitable day. He showed me the CarComp tool. Besides
myself a few other techs watched his demo. After Uwe left the conversation
was on the CarComp. Now the job was convincing my Boss to buy it for the
shop. His only hesitation is our new VAG 5051. $25,000 minimum tool
equipment. Which means you get it no questions asked.

One of the reasons of Uwe's visit was to see if I could find Garretts chip.
It is safe to say that any VW shop using the 1551 during a warranty
printout the chip cannot be detected. However I did a little snooping and
went to the timing specs. The read out showed 6.0 BTDC  Which is the
correct spec. However the display is different and does not have BTDC it
uses a < V.OT .
I scanned 98 GTI with the stock chip and the display was the same as
indicated in the repair manual.

In closing if a VW dealer wanted flag Uwe's car as a modified car they
would have to go to this channel. In normal scans the chip is invisible.

Later that same day another list member stopped by. The initial printout
showed everything normal Than I  checked the timing specs on his car. The
display was the same as Uwe's. I asked Ed if the car was chipped and he did
say he was using a Garrett 6/7 ?

Uwe does have the smoothest shifting GTI I have ever drove.  We can't have
a shifter shake problem ?

Ok, it's official.  The stock chip speaks German.  The G-chip speaks
English, at least as far as the timing labels in measuring block 10 are
concerned.

I didn't wanna deal with the 2-hour round trip to Cherry Hill again
today (sorry Don), so I stopped by my local dealer (North Penn) and
slipped one of the techs a ten-spot to bring out the 1551 and run the
printout.

Deecee ran a printout of another list member's G-Chip'd car on Wednesday
and you can see that at 

My stock chip says "v.OT" where the G-chip says "BTDC".

Unfoturnately, I don't have a printout of my car with the G.10, but it
definitley comes up "BTDC" on the 1551's display.

Bottom Line:  The G-Chip *can* be detected with a 1551 if the tech
really knows his stuff like Don does.  It will however, pass a "cursory"
scan, and most techs probably wouldn't bat an eylash at seeing "BTDC"
next to a timing angle.

1996 Passat GLX, 1999 Golf 2.0, 1997 GTI VR6   I checked the 010 channel
and in each car it showed the timing in English  BTDC.    I am very
confused.   The 98 GTI with the engine noise had the German version as well
as your car.  The 97 GTI looked bone stock.
