Just wanted to say, whoever thought of the epoxy fix for the coil pack is a
genius! Also thanks to Marc Gallagher for providing great instructions for
the fix. Side note: it is not necessary to remove the manifold cover to undo
the coil pack.

I swear, the car actually feels smoother now. Maybe it's just in my head...

It's hella easy. Just be careful if you decide to do it right after driving
home. Lots of piping hot parts around the engine bay! Good thing I had
protection--Mechanix gloves are one of the best investments I've ever made.

I'm going to be doing this next Friday on my day off. Can any idiot do it?
Anything I should be careful of? Thanks.

I did the epoxy fix on my coilpack over a year ago and that was at about
80,000 miles. I now have 114k and have not had one misfire or hesitation in
the rainy or damp weather like I used to. Saved myself the cost of a new
coilpack, so I recommend people do this first if you have this problem.

Well, the good news is that my coilpack is completely sealed.. The bad
news is that I couldn't find my damn digital camera (?!), so I
couldn't take any pictures of it. (sorry, gary!)

Once I got it out of there it was a lot easier to see where the damage
was. The bolt-hole around the cylinder #1 terminal was badly cracked,
and there were many hairline cracks all over.

An interesting thing I noticed too, was that the copper terminal on
the inside of the cylinder #1 post was covered in sortof a black
deposit of some sort (whereas all the rest were shiny copper)..
Presumably corrosion/depositing from all the water that was getting in
there through the biggest crack.. I did my best to scrape as much of
it off as I could, but it's hard to see in there, as you can imagine.

I threw on one really good thick coat of epoxy over the whole thing
(well, just the sides -- not the top), and let it dry over night.

Then, this morning I went out there and gave it a few coats with
quick-dry polyurethane just to be anal. I also put some rubber washers
on in front of the metal ones to keep it from stressing the plastic in
the future..

Plugged it back in this morning, and she purrs like a kitten. Of
course, she purred like a kitten before, too.

I took it to the auto carwash, which was usually the real test.. (the
rocker panel blast cycle of an auto carwash usually got enough water
up there to really kill it.. almost to the point of stalling).. No
problems whatever..

Looks like I'm good to go!

Thanks to Marc for the brilliant idea..

or just ask the horse.... ;)
it's also in the library....

.....as means of an update, I had to redo my original fix about a month ago.
I either missed a crack or a new crack developed (more likely). Now the
WHOLE pack is covered in epoxy.....not pretty but still working 50,000 miles
after the original problem.....

The procedure for the slathering and recommended epoxy temperture ranges
was in a European Car Tech article a few months ago.

I found this list while searching for information on a cracked coil pack. I
also found the thread by Marc Gallager about plugging the cracks in the coil

pack with a high temperature epoxy. There seem to have been a number of
people who have testified to the patch, and I think I'm going to try it out
to save myself $500.

My question is, if I am not totally succesful in plugging up the cracks with

the epoxy, and water seeps in during rainy or damp weather, causing the
engine to hesitate or misfire, can I cause any more serious problems by not
replacing the coil pack altogether now?

Here are the two sites I mentioned (the first is the site detailing the
repair of the coil packs, the second is the thread on gti-vr6).

No problems. Just misfires...now if you drive it for several weeks with
misfires I assume you will do some damage......

Trust me it works.....it has been 50,000 miles since I coated it the first
time, recoated at about 75,000 (missed a spot?) and still cooking along....

Hi,
I just wanted to mention that it has been about 1 year since I fixed
my coilpack with JB weld and no recurrences of the problem with my
1998 Jetta GLX. I would recommend this epoxy and it requires the
bare minimum of mechanical skills and a 5 mm allen wrench, acetone,
epoxy resin, and an overnight wait to let the resin cure. Thanks. Jim

Hey all!
Just wanted to add my voice to the eproxy fix for the
coil pack. Last Friday i stopped by homedepot and
picked up a high strength and high temp. eproxy that
only cost me .89!
And Followed the instructions on:
http://chris.quietlife.net/passat/coilpack.html

All i can say is wow! What a big difference! The
past few days it's been raining here in ny and no more
engine misfire.
