I replaced my suitcase with pipe. I believe the muffler shop made a few
mistakes I thought you should know about.

1. Don't replace the suitcase with a pipe with 2, 90 degree bends. Try to
make the new pipe as straight as possible. It's my opinion that this is
what causes the "boomy" noise. The exhaust comes straight down the pipe
and hits this new 90 degree turn and then another 90 and causes that area
to resonate.

2. Have them cut off the suitcase with a saw so the ends are clean. Don't
use a cutting torch.

3. Make sure to tell them that you want to be able to bring the car back to
stock in the future.

If I was to do it again I would make sure and have a shop put a pipe in
with 45 degee bends instead of 90's. My car resonates like you've
described. It's especially bad sitting in the back seat (which is directly
above the new pipe!).

Hope this helps,

Mitch

It's a suitcase-look-alike resonator . . . if you look under your car you'd
find two of 'em on the stock exhaust system . . . removing it and replacing
with a straight pipe will give you a little more high end (but kills alittle
of your low end, I believe), and of course . . . the exhaust note will be
bass-ier and quite a bit more noticeable. Good for attracting those
rice-mobiles to come race with you!

I had a pipe custom bent for my exhaust to replace the suitcase and it
drones like mad. It basically has two gradual 45 degree bends in it,
which overall create a fairly smooth 90 degree bend. My 97 had one 90
degree bend in it and had the same problem. When it gets too annoying I
downshift and keep the rpm's above 3k.

I paid $40 each time to have it done.
