Hi all,

I have a 97 GTI VR6 and I can't decide between the GIAC or the WETTERAUR 
chip.  I've been reading a lot of good stuff about the GIAC but the bottom 
line is that the WETT claims to give around 16HP! That's very impressive for 
a conventional engine.
I would appreciate any comments from all of you out there that are familiar 
with both of these chips.

Hmm, had a look at the wett page (www.chip-tuning) and seems as
though they do claim 16hp...but then again they also want 295 bux!  You
can get the GIAC for like 130 and we're all SURE the gains he claims are
for real...with the wett, it's kinda a gamble.  NTM, 16 horse is quite a
bit for not changing exhaust, intake, etc...seems almost
impossible...also wett is giving you flywheel numbers, not wheel
numbers...here are links to the comparable dynos:

I don't know man...don't get me wrong, 16 horse is a huge gain, and I'd
love to believe it's true, but with such a big gain it almost makes me
wonder if it isn't bad for the engine...Just for reference, I remember
reading an article about chip tuning the a4 1.8t when it first came out.
Wett was one of the chips they tested, and while it had the most gains,
it also made the turbo glow visibly red hot...just something to think
about.

Bottom line:  I'm not a GIAC nazi, but my v11 has been good to me...and
MANY others.

I had the WETT chip and I now have the GAIC chip.
Prob with the WETT chip (at least I had) the check engine light was on 
from the first instant, the guy I bought it from said it would go away 
after about 1000 km (about 620 miles), well after about 1500 km the 
light was still on, this bugged me. Not worth the $$$.
 The performance gains are claimed 16hp, this could be at only one place 
in the rev range certainly not across the whole powerband. Only butt 
dyno used, but I think I would notice the 16 HP.
About a week after the WETT chip went back, I got the GAIC chip. Again 
the performance gains are not huge (again only butt dyno, the engine 
revs more freely and the higher rev redline and no speed limiter (not 
that I tested that fact ;-) yah right)
With the GAIC chip I have had no problems. Better gas milege than stock, 
about the same as WETT chip. Not bad for half the price. If I could do 
it again I would probably not get a chip and save up for some of the 
higher $$ items. Cams or intake manafold.
If you absolutely have to do a mod or two start with a high flow intake, 
the new engine sounds will absotutely put a smile on your face.
These are only my opinions.  Let the flaming begin. The list was a 
little slow any way.

'95 Red GTI VR6

I have the Wett. Since it's the only brand you can get here in Mexico, it
works fine, though its really expensive, i can say worths the money ( i
haven't tryed anything else). But i will be happier if  it costed  less.
Besides Wett people is focused only in German Made cars, i think this is a
brownie point.
