Hello to all,
The subject of the 1551 scan tool readout has come up. I will try and let the
list know why we deliberately identify ourselves in the readout.
Reasons for identifying the chip:
* To let any mechanic that uses a 1551 scan tool know that the car he is
diagnosing has been modified. This keeps the guess work to a minimum.
* To identify what version of our chip the customer has.
* When the car is brought to a VW dealership for any service, the service
dept. always checks for open campaigns on the vehicle. An open campaign
is when there has been a factory update by VW. One example of this that
we have seen is the customer brings his car in for an oil change, the
service advisor looks up open campaign in the computer and sees that there
has been an update for the ECU. The service advisor will then add this to
the ticket and the ECU is replaced without the customers knowledge. As
you can see, the customer just lost his chip. The car of curiosity was a
16V 2.0 Golf.
We have had no problem with VOA identifying our chips. We have heard of many
instances where a car has been chipped and not identified causing the
technician to spend countless hours trying to diagnose the vehicle. This
resulted in a dispute between the dealer and the customer over payment for time
spent diagnosing the vehicle.
BTW... We have asked a few of the German tuners that make chips if they
identify their chips and they all said yes.
Best Regards,
Doug
