For the past several days, my '97 GTIVR6 has been acting a bit strange when first started in the morning:

-- Starts ok, starts idling
-- After 2-3 seconds of idling, engine rpms start dropping and engine dies
-- When restarted, starts up fine, idles fine, and runs great the rest of the day
-- Alternatively, when engine rpms start dropping, a light tap on the gas pedal raises the rpms to normal
idle, and car continues to run fine thereafter
--  No trouble codes found with VAG-COM

This is obviously not a big problem right now, but I'm afraid it might turn into one down the road if ignored.

Any comments/advice would be most appreciated.

I would check for a vacuum leak around your idle check valve. If you can
not hear any leaks pull of your idle check valve and spray some cleaner
in it to get some of the grit out, hopefully that will help you. One way
to check vacuum leaks is to spray a small amount of carb cleaner around
the idle check valve, and vacuum hoses, if there is a leak it will suck
some the cleaner and you will notice it right away.
