Ok, as promised here is a summary of my ordeal with my rear wiper.
For those tuning in late, my '98 GTI VR6 is supposed to have an
intermittent wiper cycle on the rear window. Additionally, it should
have a washer cycle. Only the wash cycle worked when I took delievery
of the car. My dealer claimed that the intermittent cycle had been
discontinued, although all the information I had been able to lay my
hands on claimed otherwise (including my window sticker!) After several
weeks on this group, and via phone with VWoA & my dealer, I got the
problem fixed, sort of...
Tom provided me with a relay number, which I had my dealer order and
install. This was the only change made to my car, which of course was
made under warrantee (despite my radar detector being prominantly
displayed!) Below is a description of the functions of each relay, and
part numbers.
#1H0 955 529 (Original part, could be letter "I" in 1st digit) This
relay would not activate intermittent mode at all. To move the rear
wiper, you had to squirt washer fluid. After releasing the stalk, the
fluid would stop squirting, and the wiper would continue for 3-4
strokes. That's it. Additional pushes on the stalk would do the same
thing - squirt more fluid and reset the delay.
#191 955 529 (New part) This relay will squirt fuild while pressed, and
start the wiper. Once released, the wiper will make 1 more pass. (I
still think this is wrong... should still be 3 passes) If you press the
stalk again (While it is making the last pass) it engages the fixed
intermittent mode (Non adjustable). In this mode, the wiper crosses
every ~3-4sec. until you press the stalk a 3rd time. Note: A side
effect seems to be that the FRONT wash cycle has also lost it's extra
swipes in washing (after releasing the stalk) :(
My dealer claims these are the same part, and that the original must
have been broken. (BS - A broken relay doesn't function at all, it
won't screw up timing) I am not happy about the loss of the extra
'strokes' when engaging the washer cycles, especially on the front
window! I understand that there is a programmable relay somewhere,
which I would like to check out. If anyone has info on this, please
E-mail me directly. Thanks to all who have helped - rainy days will be
much more pleasant now!
