Hi.

Like many others on this list, I ordered the Euro switch kit from
Timmons VW, and I just now installed it in my '97 VR6. I used the
instructions from the website, and I had it done in about 20 minutes.

Then the testing began. With hand brake set, I started the engine. The
DRLs were ON! Huh? Now I look down and see that, as the ABS warning
light went out, so did the BRAKE light. Huh? again. Cycled the
headlight switch through the many positions -- everything worked as
advertised. (Except that, even with the switch off, I can turn on the
high beams with the stalk.

So, to summarize:
  - DRLs on ALL THE TIME.
  - No BRAKE warning light when hand brake on.

Maybe it's the way I installed the jumper and the bridge? The mounting
pad for the 110 relay looks like this:

   --1 -2
 | __4
 |3
   --5 -6

The instructions didn't specify the pin numbers to place the bridge
and jumper in, but I think I figured it out. I've got the bridge
joining 2 and 6, and the jumper joining 3 and 4. Is that right? And
are they supposed to touch each other where they cross?

Also, I removed the 173 relay from its pad. The mounting pad stays in
place, right?

TIA for anyone's help!

Whoah, You pull out #173, and you pull out #110 and put the bridge in 110

You've got something jumpered wrong. But the brake light behavior is normal for a
DRL-less car. You lose its functionality as a handbrake idiot light when you disable
the DRLs. But it does still function as a brake system warning light, hence it does
come on when you start but then shut down when the brake system checks out ok..

The two jumpers are NOT, repeat NOT, supposed to touch each other! If they
are, rearrange them so they do not. But, you are correct in that 2-6 and
3-4. Note- the 2-6 jumper actually runs vertically to the right of these
pins so it does no touch the 3-4 jumper. These are in place of relay 110.
The relay w/ the 173 on it is the DRL relay and on my car was part number
3AO 941 589.

PS. You should be able to momentarily activate the high beams from the stalk
w/ the lights off. This is known as the 'flash to pass' feature.

My DRL-less '96 still has a functioning hand-brake idiot light. I've no
freakin' idea what's different though.
