Ben,
I added a glovebox to my car after I had taken both airbags out so I won't
be able to tell you if there was a problem with them. There was a website
that gave the procedure on how to install a glovebox in the '95 cars but I
can't find it now.
I bought the glove box used from someone who was parting out a wrecked '97
GTi for $50.
Basically you'll need a nibbler which you can buy from Radio Shack or a
Dremel tool to cut off the steel flange that you'll find when you remove the
kneebar. Once you get that out of the way, the glovebox will fit into the
new space perfectly. After that, you'll need 3 self-tapping screws to hold
the glove box on. The plastic tabs that grip onto the edges of the dash
don't work very well.
This isn't a very good explanation of how to do it and the website has a
much better procedure. Does anyone out there know which website I'm talking
about? I thought it was Jan's VW-Car-Racing page, but I couldn't find the
link there anymore.
You can email for more info if you decide to go through with this. I'll try
my best to write a proper procedure for you.
