I don't know about your car but I have a 1998 and it has the "DE" knob and
boot and to get the boot off the knob you have to undo the boot at the
bottom and then unscrew the know with your hand.  Then turn the boot inside
out over the knob and you will see that the only thing holding the boot to
the knob is a simple little zip tie.  Just snip it and stick the new knob
in and put another zip tie were the old one was and you have it.
The non-DE cars might be different but in that case you might want to
replace the boot anyway.
