('98 VR6 w/side air bag in driver's seat: I successfully did the mod to

the side bolsters with no fear of setting off the bag.)

Some of you may have seen my post complaining about the lack of
knee support at the front of the seat. I have discovered something
that has totally changed the seat.

There is a thin support bar up under the front part of the seat between
two thick support bars. You can easily find it just by feeling around
underneath the front. Simply pull this bar up as far as it will go all
along the front edge of the seat. It will end up being against the top
of the two thick support bars. The tray on the left will bend just
enough out of the way to get behind it to pull.

Once done, it will have raised the front part of the seat about 1 1/2",
maybe 2" (guessing here). It makes a HUGE difference in feel, as
you are reclined now enough that you sit IN the seat, not on TOP
of the seat, as before.

The combination of these two mods (side bolsters and front) have
transformed the seat, turning from being a uncomfortable, just plain
not too good seat, into a comfortable, supportive one.

No need to get Recaros now!

Thank you thank you.
The original description of the mod didn't quite convey that this was
absolutely the simplest mod *ever*. It takes more time to reset the
MFA.

Sit down in the seat. Put your legs foward, reach both hands down
under the bottom front edge of the leather/cloth. You'll encounter a small
bar (or big wire) running across the front of the seat.
Pull up.
That's it. It appears to be actually releasing tension on the front
of the seat rather than actually lifting it up. It only accounts
for about an inch rise, but it feels great. Your knees will thank you.
It may not be totally effective for folks well over 6 feet tall.

Andy, this mod needs to be in the archives.

We should create an index of just the zero and super low cost mods.
Cone, Knee bolsters, Side Bolsters, DRL removal, ..etc.

Well, over the last two weekends I've done a bit more research
on the seat mods for the VR6.

Jim Chu's 95 had a different seat than my 98, but the same mod
works: the fabric for the seat bottom cushion is held down at
the front by a thin bar running parallel the width of the seat. Pulling

up on this bar as hard as you can along the width of the seat
releases tension. The result is much more support underneath the
knees.

The ratchet mod on the seat bolsters works for both the seat
back and seat bottom. I recommend the 1500 lb. rated ratchet,
12' as the forces you'll use are pretty high for what the ratchets
are used for (holding down luggage, for example).

I did the seat bottom this past Saturday, and decided I didn't
like it that much, so with some shoving, did manage to bend
them back into their original position. I doubt you can do that
to the seat back, as the metal is much heavier there.

My guess is that with some oomph, you can avoid using the
ratchet completely on the seat bottom bolsters. Just pull up
really hard, or grab a friend and the both of you pull.

The little plastic tray that attaches to the side of the seat has
one of its mounting points at the front of the seat. A single screw
goes into a metal tab attached to the thin bar you'll be moving.
In effect, you'll lose your mounting point when bending the thin
bar. With a pair of pliers you can probably bend the metal
tab back into an accessible position.

The end result of these three things can be a seat that is MUCH
more comfortable than stock and it will force you to seriously
reconsider buying those Recaros...
