OK, for those of you who don't have access to a Pep Boys or an
AutoZone, I measured one of my struts so you can find a suitable
replacement. The entire strut from end to end is 15-7/16 inches, and
the strut tube itself is 7-5/8 inches. The diameter of the tube is
identical to the stock struts on the GTI hatch. The struts have a ball
joint on each end.

I believe you could go slightly longer on the struts, since the ones I
installed don't hold the hood up quite as high as the prop rod did.

I posted a message a few days ago asking about gas struts used for the hood
supports.  I wanted to find out what vehilce originally used these struts (Pep
Boys pro-lifts: part #92516 or  Auto Zone mighty-lifts: part #E95212) because I
do not have a Pep Boys or AutoZoned near me.

Well, I found out that these are originally hood supports for a '82 - '88
Toyota Supra.

hey all i just put my hood struts on and i'm so glad i have them now......i
also got them for cheaper then most of you have been paying.  i got them for
$24.99 each.
its exactly the same ones that everyones been buying at pep boys for $32.99.
i got them at super trak parts store and the part number is 95211...inal
replacement for the hood of an older toyota supra.  just thought i'd share
that and save you all some $$$

Thanks to all of you who advised me on how to install the hood-strut.   I
only bought ONE strut from Parts America for $23 (I don't have the package
so I don't remember what brand... it was a blue package that said "hood" on
it.)   They strut works great at a fraction of the cost of the 'name brands'
and was half-as-much as buying the double struts.

well the part # 982511 is for the mighty lifts hood strut if you all are
interested.......
its originally for a  87 toyota supra i believe.  its the same retro fit as
the one from pep boys but is about $7 cheaper.  hope this helps you

1) I recently saw a Neuspeed hood lift on a a GTI and it was great how the
hood close itself gently with a little nudge. My question is whether or not
the hood lift pieces from Auto Zone and Pep Boys did the same? In other
words what is the pressure of the shock on the Neuspeed hood lift compared
to the ones described in the library?

2) Why do you have to drill out the fender bolt as described in the
library? Any other info would greatly be appreciated.

Do you mean that you *want* a hood that closes with a gentle nudge?  I
prefer that it stays in place even when I hang a utility light from it--but
if an easy-touch hood is your goal, you can use a single gas strut from Pep
Boys.

I used two gas struts, and the hood stays firmly in place when raised.  It
still doesn't require much effort to close, thanks to the geometry of the
mounting points.

The ball joints from the Pep Boys / AutoZone units are larger than the
stock bolts.

If you don't want to drill, I've heard that the Bonrath kit can be found
for about the same price.  I wasn't inclined to search for it.

I have the two Mighty-Lifts from Autozone, the ones for the mid-80's Supra.
The hood opens with very little effort. When I close it there is resistance
until about halfway down. At that point it closes on it's own.


2) Why do you have to drill out the fender bolt as described in the
library? Any other info would greatly be appreciated.


The ball joints are a little bigger than the factory hole.

I have the Jamex lifts and they work great. They were $38 for the pair
and there was no drilling required. You just remove the existing bolts
and replace with the ones in the package.

Khoi, I've got the autozone lifts and they work just fine.  I've never seen
the neuspeed lifts so I can't compare. As for drilling the fender hole, you
just want to make it a tad wider to accomadate the slightly larger bolt/stud
that comes with the lifts.  At $13 bucks per side this mod is hard to beat.
My manual says to let the hood fall closed as opposed to pressing it closed.
With these struts you need pressure to bring the hood about 6-10 inches from
the lock then it will free fall. In other words, the pressure in strut is
released.  If you do this mod, be careful with a ground strap located at the
base of the windshield on the drivers side as some hood struts raise the
hood a few more inches than stock. Goodluck

I'VE SEEN EVERYTHING from bonrath hood lifts to jamex and auto
zone..and i have to say the price of the bonrath/neuspeed is not worth
it..i bought mine from a list member selling off some of his stuff for
a really good price..so i took them..along with 4 koni's and new shift
knob and boot,otherwise i would honestly have to say the pep boys lifts
are the best..my friends used them on his hatchback honda(yikes the h
word) for years and no failures..

I used two.  No smacking here.  You still have to lift the hood the first 8
or so inches.  Just be aware of the lifts.  I dont know what the "correct"
p/n is , but I used 95211 from Autozone.

One question for Rob: which way do you have the struts oriented? The shaft
base (that the hydraulic shaft extends from) needs to be attached to the
fender. The shaft itself attaches to your hood.

The hood lifts sold by Auto Zone is a popular brand, Mighty Lift.  So one
doesn't HAVE to goto AZ.  They are priced at $20 per side.

Autozone Mighty Lifts..... Part # D95211.  Another list member who's
car I look at before I purchased mine had part # D95212, and I bought
mine at the same store.  I asked the clerk to check in his computer
for the correct part #, and for the Toyota Supra 83-88 (I think those
are the years) they had the part # I have, and they didn't even
have the 212's in stock.  So I got the 211's and they work great.

I got my replacement set from Pep Boys - SACHS - the hood lifts for a 82' 
Celica/Supra as pulled up in the computer work perfectly and they are great 
quality with all necessary pieces included.

Found packaging - SACHS Lift-o-mat SG329001 (other number below barcode is 
92516)

part number corrections at least
regarding their SACHS Stabilus Lift O Mat's.

I am sure they will cross reference the
older part numbers but in the event that
anyone who is looking for these lifts gets
a counter person who is unaware of this change
the new part number is SG329001, old part number

I've got my ramps and a floor jack,
and all necessary extraneous parts
so I can begin my installation.
